In partnership with the Summer of Festivals we have created a selection of activities to help us brighten up the borough this summer in celebration of Barking and Dagenham, its local residents, its history and a movement of hope for the future. Our main aim is to inspire you to get creative and brighten your schools for the summer term. In this document you will find a variety of examples of exactly how you can get involved. Let’s get brightening! 3 A note from Summer of Festivals Join the community campaign Brightening up the Borough in the lead up to the Thank You Roadshow (3-4 July) and the Becontree Weekender with the Becontree 100 Festival on 14 August and the Roundhouse Music Festival on 15 August at Parsloes Park. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the Summer of Festivals are thrilled to be working with local cultural organisations and artists Grape Arts, Create London (The White House) and Sarina Mantle (Wild Suga) on this exciting project. We are asking the whole community (residents, care homes, schools, venues) to put up some bunting and decorate their doors, windows, gates and gardens from 18 June – 31 August. After what has been the most challenging time in many of our lifetimes with the Covid-19 pandemic we would like to thank our residents for pulling together as one borough and one community and playing their part. 2021 is also a special year for the borough as we celebrate the centenary of the Becontree Estate, the largest housing estate in the UK. 4 Event Dates 18 June -31 Aug Brightening Up the Borough – Time to decorate 27 June - Deadline Becontree Bunting - See website for Sarina Mantle’s bunting activity. 3-4 July Thank You Roadshow, whole borough Becontree Forever Weekender, Parsloes Park 14 August Becontree 100 Festival 15 August Roundhouse Music Festival Events are subject to Covid and will follow the current Government guidelines. Please confirm on the email you are happy for us to share your photos on social media and with the local press. 5 A WORD OF THANKS Activity 1 - Poetry Things you need: Pen/Pencil & Paper Let’s go: Start by asking students all the different ways we say thank you e.g. Cheers, I really appreciate, Ta How many can you come up with? How many different languages can you say Thank You in? You can do this as a class discussion or as an individual task. Once students have thought of/ written down a number of examples ask them to choose their favourite. This will become the title of their poem e.g. Thank you, Merci, Cheers. If you are using the resource sheet on page 15, students can write this title on the banner, they might even like to colour it in to make it nice and bright! 6 Next, ask students to list the things they are thankful for and why. Using the following sentence starters they can begin to form their very own poem. Thank you to… For… Here are some examples to get them started: Thank you to Barking and Dagenham for being my home, To the keyworkers For keeping us safe Thank you to the parks For the space to play in Or, students might give thanks for the smaller things… Thank you to the sunshine For brightening the day Thank you to my friend For playing with me 7 MAKE A DISPLAY Using the poems, create a thank you display in your classroom. You could even spell out the words THANK YOU with their poems. MAKE A STATEMENT If you have access to chalks, ask the students to fill the playground with rainbows and their words of thanks. SWITCH IT UP Instead of writing a poem, students might prefer to fill the page with all the things they are thankful for, this can be a class discussion or individual task. They might even choose to add some drawings or colour to the page. Tag @summerofest on Facebook or @summeroffestivals on Instagram using the hashtag #brighteninguptheborough 8 SUNSHINE WINDCATCHERS Activity 2 - Arts and Crafts Things you need: Paper plates Yellow paint Yellow or orange paper/card Tissue paper or ribbons Glue Scissors String or ribbon Let’s go: Start by asking students to paint their paper plate bright yellow! Wait for the plate to dry. Once the paint has dried, fold the plate in half. Ask students to carefully cut along the fold line, leaving them with two semi circles. Next, ask students to cut out little triangles from the yellow and orange paper or card. Turn one of the painted semi circles over, glue the triangles to the plain side of the plate so that they are pointing outwards, creating the sun’s rays. Now, glue the colourful strips to the plain side of your plate, filling it up from one side to the other. (These can be made from strips of colorful paper, ribbons or fabric, whatever you have available in your classroom) BRIGHT IDEA! Create a rainbow with your colourful strips. 9 Ask students to glue around the edge of the other painted semi-circle, secure it to the back of the plate you have just stuck your sun’s rays and strips to, creating a double sided sunshine. Students might like to give their sunshine a character by drawing a smiley face on one side. On the other side encourage students to write one thing they enjoy about school. Finally, make a small hole at the top of the paper plate, thread a piece of string or ribbon through so you can hang the wind catchers. 10 MAKE A DISPLAY You can hang your sunshines around your classroom and school. You could even hang them in the windows for all to enjoy. MAKE A STATEMENT Weather dependent: you might hang your bright wind catchers outside, on trees or even on the school gates. SWITCH IT UP We have provided a template resource for this activity, see page 14. Print off the sunshine resource, one for each student. Ask students to colour in their sunshine using bright colours. Carefully cut out the sunshine. Ask students to write something they enjoy about their school on one side of their sunshine. They might like to draw a smiley face on the other side to give the sunshine a character. Finally, make a small hole on the top of the paper sunshine, thread a piece of string or ribbon through so you can hang the wind catchers OR use blue tac to display them on your windows.
