Creating a M3U Playlist In Windows (7/8/10) – Using MS-DOS! 1. Navigate to the folder where the music you wish to add to the playlist are stored: 2. In the address bar (where the path is shown) type cmd, then press Enter. This will open a Command Prompt in a separate window. 3. In the command prompt window run the following command (replace the NAME_OF_PLAYLIST with the name you wish to give to the playlist): dir *.mp3 /b > “NAME_OF_PLAYLIST.M3U” This command is broken down as follows: dir is a DOS command to list the contents of a folder; *.mp3 is a parameter of the dir command to only list files with a .mp3 extension (this can be changed if you have WMA, FLAC etc.). If this is omitted the list will include the M3U file that will be created, you will then have to edit the file generated to remove it (useful if you have a mix of formats); /b is a switch to show only the names of the files; if omitted the list includes extra metadata such as size, creation date etc. > sends the output of this command to a specified file (in this case NAME_OF_PLAYLIST.M3U). Press Enter once done, you should see no errors. 3. Switch back to the explorer view of the folder with the music files – a new file will appear. 6. You can open the M3U file with a text editor (right-click > Open With > Notepad) and it should contain a list of all the files in the folder. Note that by default the dir command will list files alphabetically – this can be changed by using another switch.
