Write it out because studies have shown that writing out thoughts, ideas and brainstorms long hand can be significantly more helpful to the educational experience than typing. 2.) Typical goal setting formulas fail because they ask you to focus outside of yourself to achieve tasks such as saving 20K or fitting into your “skinny jeans”. These fall short because things don’t motivate us our feelings do. Intentions or “soul goals” as I like to call them realize that your desires emerge from within you and are an expression of Source. Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 1 GLOW SHEET Here are my 3 steps to help you laser in on your deepest desires and discard the B.S that’s confusing and frustrating you. 1. CLARITY - Learn to define your WHY and whether it serves your Highest Good. 2. COMMITMENT - Assess your level of commitment and if it’s not where it needs to be learn what to do next. 3. CARE & ACCOUNTABILITY - Understand how honesty with yourself and someone else is crucial to your success. Define your INTENTION Answer the following 2 questions about a goal you have. Do a stream of consciousness. Let yourself riff and see what comes out. No judgment. Why do I want to achieve this goal? (i.e. what do I think I’ll get and feel by doing so?) Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 2 GLOW SHEET What is my intention? Now look at what you’ve written and ask yourself, is this coming from my brain or my heart? my logic or my magic? fear or love? If it’s any of the former, sit in silence for a few moments and take a few deep breaths. Then ask your heart what it wants. Write whatever comes to you. Usually the first answer is the right answer. Your intuition doesn’t beat around the bush. If you don’t hear anything, go for a walk, forget about it for a while, maybe a few days. The answer will be revealed when you are ready to hear it. Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 3 GLOW SHEET Assess your level of COMMITMENT Once you have clarity about what your goal is from completing Step 1 return to your journal. Fold a blank page in half and title the left column “Commitments” and the right column “Experiments”. Commitments Experiments Most of us have only Usually are actions a handful of that support our commitments commitments They are things we Can change more do NO MATTER often WHAT Allow us to try new They are a reflection things without all the of our values pressure And often don’t Are fun ways to lera, change a ton once we grow and explore know ourselves Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 4 GLOW SHEET Now think about the goal you clarified in Step 1 and ask yourself, Am I 100% committed to this goal?If the answer isn’t a resounding “HELL YEAH" put it in the “Experimental” column (this is where MOST of your goals will end up fyi). Allow yourself to explore and experiment with various ways to align with this goal. No pressure, led with curiosity. If your answer to the question is a “HELL YEAH” you may have identified a commitment. Most of us only have a handful of commitments, they’re things we do NO MATTER WHAT. For example one of my commitments is I don’t drink or use drugs no matter what because I’m in recovery from alcoholism. Commitments tend to be more general but we likely have specific behaviors to support them. These behaviors can change whereas our actual commitment usually won’t. So in my example, when I first got sober I used to talk to another person in recovery every single day. Almost a decade later while I do maintain regular contact with my sober support system it’s not on a daily basis. The frequency of this behavior changed based on my needs in my recovery journey. Both support my overarching commitment that I don’t drink or use no matter what. Here's another example. Commitment: I take care of my mind, body and Spirit Experimental Goal: Practice yoga 3x week Let’s say you go on a week-long vacation to Portugal where you spend your time taking long walks on the beach, going to museums and meeting wonderful new people. Have you failed at your experimental goal? No. You’ve adapted to a new situation and are certainly continuing to honor your commitment while on your trip. Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 5 GLOW SHEET Does my goal CARE for my soul? The purpose of your goal is to grow and expand, not to beat yourself to a pulp. Ask yourself, “Does my goal serve my soul?” If your answer is not “Yes! Absolutely!” reevaluate it. You may have to go back to Step One and see if the intention behind it is heart centered. If the answer is yes, take care of yourself by ensuring that your reSOULution is realistic. If you want to improve your financial life don’t begin by decreasing your weekly budget from $300 a week to $50. That’s not fair to your sweet self nor are you going to be able to do it without feeling deprived. Set incremental goals instead. Start by creating a budget and finding out what you can afford to spend weekly then cut out things slowly and incrementally. Maybe you treat yourself to a latte twice a week instead of 5 times a week? Continue making adjustments until you’ve met your final reSOULution. Giving yourself milestones will boost your self- esteem and motivate you to keep going. And remember you’re looking to create lasting change. You have time. Suffering doesn’t improve your odds of success. Kindness and planning does. Write out 2-3 goals that feel like they care for your soul below. Lesson 7: Intention Setting © You Are Complete LLC 6 GLOW SHEET Who lovingly helps me stay ACCOUNTABLE to my goal? Everyone needs at least one person that knows everything about them. A therapist, partner, mentor, sponsor, sibling, spiritual guide, best friend. You are not an island. Humans require connection and to be known. Loved in spite of our imperfections.
