Outside Lives Health and Safety Policy Health and Safety Outside Lives must look after the health and safety of its people. This includes our staff, volunteers and other people who do work for us. Everyone at Outside Lives is responsible for keeping themselves and other people safe. We stop accidents happening by: • Making sure our equipment is working properly and safe to use • Training people to do their jobs safely 2 ! If there is an accident, we take it seriously. We write down what happened and learn how to do things better. This policy tells you: Th • Who is responsible for different things • How we try to stop accidents from happening • How we check we are following health and safety law 3 Things that everyone is responsible for Everyone must do their best to keep themselves and other people safe. We must all follow the rules. Everyone must: • Work in a way that keeps us all safe • Use equipment safely, and only when trained to use it • Wear protective equipment For example, using ear defenders when using noisy machinery. 4 • Report accidents and anything that seems unsafe It is important to know who to go to for help. 5 Things that managers are responsible for Managers make sure that we all follow this policy and the law. Managers make sure that people: • Work safely • Are trained properly • Have and use protective equipment Managers make sure that equipment and buildings are safe to use. 6 Managers talk to staff about health and safety. They make sure that staff follow the rules. Managers must write down and tell people about: • Hazards. These are things that could be dangerous • Near-misses. This is when someone came close to being hurt • Any accidents that happen 7 Things the operations director has to do The Operations Director is the person who makes sure we follow Health and Safety law. The Operations Director will check that: • Everyone follows this policy • Everyone understands what they are responsible for • We have enough equipment and people to do our work safely 8 • We repair equipment and buildings regularly, so they are safe to use • We have staff who can give First Aid if there is an accident For example, a first aider can put a bandage on a wound, until it can be seen by a doctor or paramedic. 9 Risk A risk is something that might go wrong. For example. Someone might fall and get hurt if they climb up a ladder. This is a risk. ! Some risks are serious, but unlikely to happen. For example. A large fire might happen in a building. ! Some risks are not so serious but are more likely to happen. For example. Cutting yourself on a knife when working in a kitchen. 10 A Risk assessment is a way of working out how likely and how serious a risk is. The assessment tells you what is being done to make the risk less likely and less serious. We must look at the risks before we W do any new activities. And we must d write a risk assessment w All of our risk assessments must be checked regularly. 11 Chemicals Some chemicals can damage your health. You find chemicals in things like cleaning products. We use and store chemicals carefully. We put a special label on our chemicals. It tells us how to use them safely. 12 Lifting and carrying People who lift and carry things must be trained to do this properly. It helps to stop people getting hurt. Everyone must do some training every 2 years. First Aid Some of our staff and volunteers are trained to help people when they are injured. They make sure that the First Aid boxes have the right equipment in them. Things like plasters, bandages and gloves. 13 Accidents We do everything we can to stop accidents from happening. All accidents must be reported to the Operations Director as soon as possible. Serious accidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive. The Health and Safety Executive makes sure organisations follow health and safety law. 14 A serious accident is when: • The person has to go to hospital • The person is off work for more than 7 days because of the accident • Someone is seriously injured • Someone dies After an accident, managers will look at why it happened. They will try to make sure it doesn’t happen again. 15 How we check we are following Health and Safety rules The Board are a group of people who are responsible for Outside Lives. The board makes sure we: • Follow the law • Look after our money • Keep our staff safe 16 The Board meet every month. They talk about health and safety at every meeting. They want to know: • If there have been any accidents • What is being done to stop accidents happening • Is everyone getting the training they need to stay safe 17
