Wehner ‘ae Oe Oe AY Bd ei, 7 Pike me ; 7 ve qe Manuscript Notes on Avian Types/ by Adriaan van Rossem In 1933 Adriaan van Rossem travelled abroad to visit museums, primarily to examine types, and also to check on other materials. His notes indicate the following itinerary: Paris July 24 to Aug. 3 Munchen Aug. 19 to 21 Darmstadt Aug, 22 Berlin Aug. 24 to 313 Sept. 2 Dresden Sept. 1 London Sept. 7 to 25 Cambridge Sept. 21 In 1938 van Rossem and I were abroad to- gether to attend the Ninth International Ornithological Congress at Rouen. We examined a few specimens in Paris and later were in London where we lived as guests with David and Muriel Bannerman. We also visited Cam- bridge. In June 1939 van Rossem went abroad again primarily to examine type material. Beforehand he came to Washington, and for a time was with me, while he worked daily at the U.S. National Museum. He had with him his notes from his previous studies abroad, written longhand on small sheets. During his stay in Washington the political situation in Europe steadily became more critical in movement toward war. While travel abroad was not prohibited, it was evident that it might be interrupted wi much prior warning. D loo eres ae In consideration of this van Rossem asked me to have his longhand notes typed with a carbon copy that he could take with him while the originals were left in my care. Also he kindly gave me the ribbon copy with permission to retain it for my files for use as needed, as indicated in his handwritten note of June 19, 1939 that is included with these papers, with excerpts from two of his letters written in London August 13 and 29. His itinerary in 1939, in main part, was as follows: Leiden July 3 to & Brussels July 11 to 29 London Aug. 11 to mid-September With his letters from the latter city he forwarded the notes made during this journey, to be typed and placed with the other material. The original of the typed copy, given to me by van Rossem, is bound herewith, with the material arranged by genus name in alpha- betical order. Leiden is a very different place under the guidance of Junge, compared to the Van Oort regime of several years ago. I spent two weeks there with excellent results in the way of Bonaparte and Temminck types - thanks to Junge's help. I may say that our very pleasant impressions of him from Rouen last year are more than verified, both personally and professionally. He devoted practically his entire time to me at the museum, took me on several long country walks, and seemed really disappointed that I would not put up at his home instead of a hotel. thtt+ Brussels took nearly a month - much more work there in the way of Du Bus, Dubois and Bonaparte types than had been anticipated. There is considerable systematic grief there - Most of Du Bus! "Mexico" types being taken in "Tabasco" by Ghiesbreght - in territory which is now Chiapas - and consequently his names are perfectly good for several Central American mountain races. Also Bonaparte's Passerculus anthinus type is there - beyond any question, Thank God it is "the" Western Savannah Sparrow and consequently no change from Griscom and Peters' review is necessary. oS myseM de fdEss: aecot bobs REET af deuguh 1901 7 | eae to ‘elotic odd bavow need gnivell bigots I tatt mese one Si emoeeur ywibave brs ‘ _siroget lo sroe sutoa Simdigze jbrrsoslg jade iy yrev a af nebiel mel ond o¢ beteqmon ,ogal To jusbick ang taede I sons etusy-Iatevee Io eminet g00 (Ons th. gtiueet ino. eons dictiw oxeds aexfeaw owt » Soltisds - songs aon? bas edsaqanol te yew, Waev mb teit ybe-qam I .qled etegnul ot tet geuae mort mid to enokeesiqnt tnseselq viisrosieq Wed Bottinev malt otom ors cesy Yilsoijosia badoved ol .yilsenoivestor bas © ‘it ood passevm aft te om of omkd otidete ald - bamese “tins eatiev reine yaol Lerswes ‘fo qu dig don bifid I sartd hecrtonaseth yflee1 »Lotol s to heedeni emod eld o4 otes+ Som foma_- dtten s Nissen dood @eeeuxt pris shod .esd wd To yew ond ni exrsit drew - a botagtotins need bel medt esq oJasqsnol - stent ‘tefun ofiemeteye oldserabienoos ei etedT si sevlet gnted eoqi Vonkxs!™ tat ol to dat Hoidw yiotiaiedni - tdgerdes ir) yd" oomadsT" esmean eid vlinserexinos bas - esqetdd won ef naotzend Lenzned Latevea rcl boog yltoetreq sis Bad slodreqenct oeli .B8981 genera: ceca ded we gta ~ orarlt ef ext ot geld et df bot is ~é a! ee eel I only arrived here two days ago - everyone is out of town this month.
