Hydrangea Pattern Directions By Megan Zaniewski @Megembroiders I use 1 strand of DMC #310 (Black) embroidery floss for this entire design. The entire design is stitched in backstitch. For a different look, you can experiment with using colored or variegated threads, using a different outlining stitch, or even using filling stitches. Step 1 Transfer the design onto fabric. I transfer only the general outline, not the shading lines, to save time (and sanity). You can later freehand the shading lines as you embroider the design, using the pattern as a general reference. Step 2 Using a backstitch, start at the stem and work along the outline of the design, finishing back at the other side of the stem of the hydrangea Step 3: Using a backstitch, fill in the outline of the individual petals. Shorten stitches around curves for a smoother line. Step 4: Add shading to the stem, using a backstitch. Step 5: Shade in some of the spaces between petals with cross-hatching (straight stitches running parallel and perpendicular) Step 6: Add shading on the petals using curved backstitches Step 7: Add veins to the leaves using backstitch. All done!
