Afua Atta-Mensah, Lily Fan, Teresa Gonzalez, Nikki Kateman, and Juanita Scarlett have joined the board of 21 in ‘21, a grassroots organization that was formed with the mission of achieving full representation on the New York City Council by helping women win with the goal of electing 21 women in the 2021 election cycle. In last year’s historic New York City election, 21 in ‘21 far exceeded its goal, as the City Council now has 31 women and a woman speaker. Yvette Buckner was elected Board Chair after completing her term as Vice Chair, Teresa Gonzalez and Lily Fan were elected as Vice Chairs, Ya-Ting Liu will remain as Secretary, and Amelia Adams stepped down as Chair and was elected as Treasurer. “I am so proud of the historic wave of women we were able to elect last year together, and was honored to serve as Chair,” said Amelia Adams . “I look forward to continuing this work with this incredible coalition of women as Treasurer. Mentorship and supporting networks is a core value of our organization. I am so proud that our new executive board represents not only the diversity of the board and City, but also has provided opportunity for growth from within.” “I’m honored to take over as Chair of this organization,” says Yvette Buckner . “I will be working to ensure that we sustain our success and build upon the political power we’ve built for women in NYC.” 21 in ‘21 will continue its work in NYC to ensure sustained gender equity in the NYC Council, focusing on the City Council elections in 2023. Within four years, the group plans to expand their scope to include citywide and borough president races. The new board members join returning members Dr. Debbie Almontaser , Elyse Buxbaum , Heidi Sieck , Beatrice Sibbles, Camille Rivera. Afua Atta-Mensa is currently the Chief of Programs for Community Change. She brings with her an extensive knowledge of organizing for minority communities and created the Follow Black Women Campaign. She brings legal expertise to the Board. Lily Fan is the first Asian American woman to serve as a Commissioner to the New York State Liquor Authority (NYSLA). She had previously served as Counsel to the Standing Committee on Social Services in the NY State Senate. She graduated from Yale Law School. She is a Tony-award winning theater producer and her documentary films have won the Sundance Film Festival twice. She brings expertise in government, theater, film, local politics, and law. Teresa Gonzalez is the first Latina partner at Bolton-St. Johns and is a co-founder and Principal of DalyGonzalez, where she brings her experience with stakeholder and community engagement, government and public relations to an array of non-profit and corporate clients, and will add this expertise - and her networks - to the Board. Nikki Kateman is the Political & Communications Director for Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW. Her experience working for labor unions on legislative advocacy and government relations will offer the board a valuable perspective on ensuring equity for workers across New York City and State, while supporting women running for office. Juanita Scarlett is currently a partner at Bolton St. Johns, where she advises clients in the healthcare, energy, economic development and education sectors on their public policy and public affairs objectives. She brings with her to 21 in ‘21 a wealth of government, communications, and private sector experience.
