Confeitos are a typical Portuguese sweet. They are made from caramelized sugar syrup and flavourful seeds, such as fennel or anise. Instead of a smooth ball, they are shaped to form tiny star-like spikes. They first arrived in Japan through Portuguese merchants and Jesuit priests in the 16th century. After which they developed great popularity amongst the Japanese imperial court, however, their recipe was closely guarded by the Portuguese living in japan. Under the name Konpeito , this sweet is still a part of Japanese culture. It can be found in tea ceremonies, where it's used as a sweetener. It is also popular with the children and is even used as altar decoration during Girls’ Day, on March 3rd. Confeitos
