Multiple stories explain the origins of the caipirinha . According to Instituto Brasileiro da Cachaça , it first appeared in São Paulo, in 1918, as a home remedy said to cure the Spanish Influenza. This version of the caipirinha was said to also use honey and garlic. Another version claims that its creator was Queen Carlota Joaquina, wife to John VI, as she was fond of this lime, brown sugar and cachaça concoction, which can be prepared in the same glass it is served on. Despite all the different stories, one thing is sure: this beverage originated in the São Paulo countryside, where it is consecrated as the drink of the working class. Its name is derived from “caipira”, a word of tupi origin, which means “the one who works the fields”. Caipirinha
