OUR CURRENT CERVICAL HEALTH ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES Despite cervical cancer being a preventable disease, it is the second most common cancer in terms of incidence and mortality among women in Ghana. Prevention is the best protection against getting cervical cancer when boys and girls are vaccinated before they are sexually active (9-14 years) coupled with regular screening of women 18+ years. $9.47 is the cost of screening one woman over 18years using low-priced but effective acetic acid. To screen 100 women is $946.47. To undertake community-wide screening for women aged 18+ and then to treat and refer those who may have abnormal cells/problems to dedicated cancer centers in other parts of Ghana increases this to $3,479 The Ghanaian government, with assistance from the Vaccine Alliance, rolled out HPV vaccinations for 9–to 14-year- old girls. With your donation, we are supporting this campaign by educating rural communities in the Upper East Region to maximise the benefits of this initiative. $1,750 sensitizes one remote village to understand the full benefits of HPV vaccinations before girls are sexually active. Our target is to reach populations in the remote rural districts where the roll out was below 90%-the World Health Organization’s (WHO) benchmark to achieve herd immunity (see table below). To end cervical cancer, the WHO recommends “90-70-90” targets by 2030: 90% HPV vaccination coverage for girls by age 15, 70% of women screened by ages 35 & 40, 90% of women with precancerous lesions treated and 90% of invasive cancer cases managed. This approach comprehensively combines all levels of prevention – Primary (vaccination & Education), Secondary (Screening & treating) and Tertiary ( timely treatment of cancer).
