It allows you to model complex systems without the need for dedicated equipment. Packet Tracer provides three main menus that allow you to: ▪ add devices and connect them via cables or wireless ▪ select, delete, inspect, label, and group components with in your network ▪ manage your network The network management menu allows you to: ▪ open an existing/sample network ▪ save your current network ▪ modify your user profile or your preferences 2 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies Exercise 1 In this exercise, we will build a simple Peer - to - Peer network between two PCs. we will also configure an address so that each station can communicate using TCP/IP. Finally, we will use a TCP/IP program called ping to test our network. 1 - Which type of cable is used to connect the PCs? Why? Stra ight - through cables are mainly used for connecting non - similar devices, while crossover cables are mostly used for connecting similar devices 3 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies 2 - Mention the type of network used in this exercise? 3 - Create the network shown above using cisco packet tracer. In order to connect the PCs to each other, you will need one crossover patch cable. Connect the crossover patch cable from PC0 to PC1. Choose F astEthernet0/1. 4 - Assign an IP address manually, Now that you have built the physical layer of your Ethernet LAN, you will configure TCP/IP on each computer. Each PC will need an IP address in order to communicate using TCP/IP. (choose the following IP ad dresses: PC0 IP A d d ress : 192.168.0.1, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 PC1 IP Address : 192.168.0.2; Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 To set an IP Ad dress in a PC: o Double - click [PC1] o Under Interface, click on FastEthernet and set the IP address 192.168.1.1 Mention the role of an IP address in a network? About IP Addressing ❖ IP Address is short for Internet Protocol Address. ❖ It is a unique address assigned to each computing device in an IP network. ❖ ISP assigns IP Address to all the devices present on its network. ❖ Computing devices use IP Address to identify and communicate with other devices in the IP network. 4 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies ❖ Two types of IP Ad d r esses : Internal IP addres s (Private ) and an external IP address ( Publi c ) What is an IP Address? An IP address is a string of numbers separated by periods. IP addresses are expressed as a set of four numbers — an example address might be 192.158.1.38. Each number in the set can range from 0 to 255. So, the full IP addressing range goes from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. IP Address Forma t IP Address is a 32 bit binary address written as 4 numbers separated by dots. • The 4 numbers are called as octets where each octet has 8 bits. • The octets are divided into 2 components - Net ID and Host ID. 1) Network ID represents the IP Address of the network and is used to identify the network. 2) Host ID represents the IP Address of the host and is used to identify the host within the network. 5 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies IP Address Example ❖ Classful Addressing System 6 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies ❖ Internal IP addres s (Private ) and an external IP address ( Publi c ) What is a public IP address? A public IP address is an IP address that can be accessed directly over the internet and is assigned to your network router by your internet service provider (ISP). Your personal device also has a private IP that remains hidden when you connect to the internet thro ugh your router’s public IP. What is a private IP address? A private IP address is the address your network router assigns to your device. Each device within the same network is assigned a unique private IP address (sometimes called a private network addr ess) — this is how devices on the same internal network talk to each other. 7 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies Types Of IP Address IP Addresses may be of the following two types 1) Static IP Address • Static IP Address is an IP Address that once assigned to a network element always remains the same. • They are configured manually. • Some ISPs do not provide static IP addresses. • St atic IP Addresses are more costly than dynamic IP Addresses 2) Dynamic IP Address Dynamic IP Address is a temporarily assigned IP Address to a network element. • It can be assigned to a different device if it is not in use. • DHCP or PPPoE assigns dynamic I P addresses. 5 - Examine your computers IP (Layer 3) and MAC (Layer 2) address es. Use the command ipconfig in the MS - DOS p rompt. ✓ IPCONFI G stands for Internet Protocol Configuratio n . This is a command - line application which displays all the current TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) network configuration, refreshes the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and DNS (Domain Name Server). It also displays IP a ddress, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters 8 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies 6 - Which command do you use to test your network? The ping utility relies on the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) at the internet layer of TCP/IP. Its most basic use is to confirm network connectivity between two hosts. Ping sends out an ICMP echo request to which it expects an ICMP echo reply response Other way to test connection , use the Add Simple PDU tool o Click on it o Click on the first PC o Click on the second PC Then look down in the bottom right corner to see if the ping was successful. 9 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University College of science and human itarian studies Exercise 2 Put a checkmark in front of the correct IP A ddress Is i t an IP Address ?
