.egb I’m Miles Egbuchiem, a designer, winner of the SKHS 2016 prom “best dancer”, a serial playlist maker * , owner of seemingly bottomless stomach and a hobbyist painter/sculptor. *With apparently questionable taste TOTHEWORLD ToTheWorld is a fictional non-for-profit social enterprise created in response to the lack of representation of Black- British Graphic & Product Designers in the design industry. With the aim of achieving this through a biannual exhibition that features and showcases the work, experiences and influences of select Black-British designers. I interviewed Ernest Wereko to discover his influences, background and then further analysed his work to spot any recurring themes that could be used in the development of the exhibition identity and design. I wanted to think of potential ways the home could be protected from flooding in 15 years time, pivoting JCB as a brand that will be helping to protect the UK public. Water Repellent Dispenser Speculative Design UK Flooding in 2035 Final Concept Storyboard Biodegrable Flood Defence Completely Self-Deploying Low Energy Usage Biodegradable expanding foam made from an altered version of isocynate and polyol resin ,which react together create a version of expanding foam that will degrade after a few days making it much easier for te user to clean up and disassemble after a flood. Completely self deploying, meaning in the event of a flood, if a user is not physically able to install flood defence, i.e severe mobility issues, being asleep or simply not being home, the AutoGate will fully block any water coming in through a door, up to 1 metre, meaning in the worst case scenario users are at least given more time to evacu- Through a combination of the use of Zigbee technology which is a energy efficient communication network that allows smart devices to communicate with each other while using a fraction of the power of wifi and bluetooth. Along with this Polymer Alkaline Batteries are being utilized to further extend the AutoGate’s life cycle, with Polymer batteries tipped to become the industry leader in battery technology, allowing for peak performance of the AutoGate. 1. JCB Installs AutoGate to front wall of house. 2. Depending on width and length of the door up to 6 modules can be installed to optimize protection of the door way. 3. AutoGate sends an echolocation beam every 20 minutes to detect any water levels depth. This process is rotated around each module, to conserve battery. If a cm of water is detected then, frequency of detection increases to once every 5 minutes. 4. If water levels in front of door rises to 8cm, AutoGate modules will communicate with each other to establish an order of firing, as to not have all 6 modules firing at once. This is done through the use of Zigbee Technology. 5. When AutoGate has been alarmed, user will get an alert via the device of their choosing, i.e a smart speaker / voice assistant or phone, once again via Zigbee technology. 6. Before adminstering the foam, the module will first angle the shoot to get the best possible spray arc, this will be preset by the JCB Engineer specially for the door in question.v 7. Lowest modules will adminster expanding spray first. 8. If water continues to rise then the immediate modules above will adminster until all 6 modules have deployed, creating a watertight flood barrier of a metre high. UK Flooding in 2035 Final Concept Render Speculative Design The final concept is a self deploying floodgate, that sprays a foam that expands and acts as barrier to entry of flood water into a house up to 1m high. HILLINGDON LITERARY FESTIVAL I was commissioned to design the logo for the 2019 Hillingdon Literary Festival. After finishing the logo, I decided to explore other parts of the branding such as the poster and banners to see where the logo be taken.
