About Canaipa Canaipa is one of the oldest houses in Wooloowin and was built on Lutwyche St (Now Wooloowin Avenue) for John James Shannon, a law clerk and his wife, Susan. The Queensland Electoral Roll shows that J.J.Shannon qualified for voting rights on the basis of his ownership of the residence in April 1906. John and Susan were married in 1903 in Brisbane and had a number of children. John Shannon died in 1940 and his wife, Susan died in 1950. Recently Canaipa has had little maintenance and was sold off market to a developer in 2021. Development Recently a Development Application has been made on Canaipa, this application will see some areas of the house demolished, including the front stairs, bridge and the back wall. It will also see a double carport built on the front boundary and an extension to the front side of the house. Canaipa - 44 Wooloowin Avenue, Wooloowin Protect our character homes. Historical areas being demolished Extension to the side of the house Demolished bit Web address www.facebook.com/ ClayfieldWooloowinCharacter The new carport out the front will have almost as much street frontage as the surrounding houses and significantly affect the streetscape including blocking views to and from the houses. According to Brisbane City Council, in Character houses carports should be at least 6 metres back or underneath the house. But this development aims for one that is 0m from the front and side boundary. The new driveway is proposed to be 5 metres wide. That will be 80cm away from the large tree, meaning the driveway will either kill the tree or damage it, making it a potential falling hazard. Why? Why would the developer be creating a large carport out the front that blocks the view of the backyard, when they have so much room in the back and the sides? TOWNHOUSES! The developer accidentally left this on the plans submitted to council. It is clear that the next step of this development is significant townhouses in the backyard. Despite Brisbane City Council ‘banning’ townhouses in suburban backyards. If you can block the view from the street with a giant carport, it will make it easier to build them. They will obviously try to build a driveway down the other side of the house to incorporate this. If you disagree with this, please let your voice be heard that you disapprove of this gargantuan carport and demolition of a part of our history. What can you do?
