RESEARCH PROJECT: PROGRESS UPDATE May 2023 Thayná Diniz Mami University of Amsterdam EMERGING MARKET ECONOMIES AND THE THE GREEN TRANSITION RESEARCH QUESTION: How do internal political, economic, social, and external factors influence emerging market economies' decision to transition to a green economy? Sub-question: how are these dynamics affected by regime type? Brazilian and Chinese cases THE ARGUMENT EM economies' decision to initiate a green transition will take place whenever external pressures – namely the ones stemming from the international community – to do so align with domestic economic interests. What is novel about this argument is the use of an economic perspective to shape the very definition of the key factors that influence policy implementation, including motivations, resources, obstacles, and external factors - from Berry and Berry's (2009) unified model and MLP framework. All interviews with experts have been conducted and their results have been analyzed. The data obtained from the interviews is generally consistent with the argument presented . Overall, the interviews have provided valuable insights and contributed to a deeper understanding of the topic. PROGRESS REPORT 6 MAIN THEMES: External factors, including global markets, regulations, and technology transfer, shape the green transition in emerging markets. Civil society and stakeholder engagement are crucial in promoting environmental awareness and influencing government action. Implementing green policies involves balancing environmental and economic goals, innovation and technology adoption, and long-term planning and coordination across government agencies. ISSUES Any suggestions? As I delve deeper into the methodology for policy analysis, I am unsure if the process-tracing analysis is the most appropriate method for my research. While it is a thorough and systematic approach, it may be too lengthy and complex for the scope of my project (particularly in sight of how much room I have left). Instead, I have considered analyzing the text of a given policy to understand the interests involved and trace a parallel between my argument, my interviewees’ responses, and the practice.
