Her mother is a survivor of the Stolen Generations, and her father is the black sheep of an affluent white family who ran away from home and got married. Together, they chose to raise Yarrila and her siblings on the mission within a close-knit Aboriginal community. Yarrila grew up poor, but extraordinarily rich in culture, surrounded by family, Country, community, stories and the strength of the matriarchs who came before her. From a very young age, she dreamed of becoming an actress. Yarrila imagined stages, films, Hollywood and a life beyond anything she could see on the mission. Alongside that creative ambition was another fire in her belly, a fierce determination to right the wrongs of the past and fight for her people, her culture and her Country. Charismatic, funny, ambitious and deeply romantic, Yarrila follows her childhood dream from humble theatres all the way to Hollywood, where she marries and pursues a career as an actress. When the marriage collapses, she returns home broke and heartbroken. But when sacred sites on her ancestral Country are threatened by forestry operations and Yarrila steps forward to protect them, reconnecting with her cultural responsibility as a Traditional Custodian and the power of her own voice. Guided by her ancestors, she eventually returns to Sydney for a nine-month artists’ residency, determined to rebuild her life on her own terms. Yarrila must reconcile the two forces that have always driven her: the dreamer who wants to shine and the warrior who was born to fight for something bigger than herself.
