Newton ’ s Third Law Experiment “ Manual ” Physics Yamel Dajlala Diego Garin, Guillermo Arreola, Sahid G rijalva Introduction Newton ’ s Third Law : Acti on and R eaction According to Newton's third law of motion, whenever two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite f orces on each other. I t is important to remember that the two forces: act on two different objects are of the same type (eg both contact forces) Examples : A cat sits on the ground There are contact gravitational forces between Earth and the cat: the cat pulls the Earth up the Earth pulls the cat down These forces are equal in size and opposite in direction. Pushing a pram There are contact forces between the person and the pram: the person pushes the pram forwards the pram pushes the person backwards These forces are equal in size and opposite in direc tion. Purpose of the Practice The purpose of this practice is to prove and explain newton’s third law with a simple experiment, and explain the steps in a manual so everyone, including kids from other schools, are able to easily recreate it, and test if this law is true , to have a better overall understanding. Methodology Materials for the Practice - Straw - Balloon - Rubber Band - 4 Soda caps (more if needed) - Plastic cup - Wooden Sticks Development of the Practice Our video on the procedure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn8H9fA3y84&ab_cha nnel=MRSG Steps: 1. Make 2 holes on each side of the plastic cup, to later fit the wooden sticks. 2. Make a hole in the middle of all the soda caps to fit the wooden sticks. 3. Put the wooden sticks in the plastic cup, and at the end of each stick, fit a soda cap to be used as wheels. Make sure everything rolls smooth. 4. Next, put the balloon on one end of the straw, and secure it with the rubber band. 5. M ake a hole on the to p of your cup and on the front, fit the other end of the straw through it 6. Watch it ride away! Results and Conclusion After inflating the Balloon and letting it fly away, we can conclude that the third law of newton is accurate and applies to all matter. Eventually, without this law, the whole car wouldn’t be moving . It is a fun practice with materials that are very accessible and easy t o get, and proves that all actions, have a reaction.
