Rekonstruktion des Vorsemitischens Reconstruction of Pre-Semitic Autor: Adrian Johnson E-Mail: ajsemailadresse@proton.me Abstrakt / Abstract Dieser Artikel wird fünf Lautverschiebungen diskutieren, die vor der Entstehung des Ursemitischens auftraten. Manche von ihnen, obwohl kontrovers, wurden bereits von anderen Autoren veröffentlicht, doch einige sind komplett neu. Jene Lautverschiebungen werden durch interne Rekonstruktion aufgedeckt This article will discuss five sound shifts, that occurred before the Proto-Semitic stage. Some of them, despite being controversial were already discussed by other authors, though others are completely new as well. Said sound shifts were discovered through internal reconstruction. Inhalte / Contents 1.Vorsemitische Halbvokalverschiebungen / Pre-Semitic semivowel changes 2. Entstehung der Doppelwurzeln / Creation of geminate roots 3. Entähnlichung zweier i-Vokale / Dissimilation of two i-vowels 4. Der vierte Langvokal / The forth long vowel 5. Semitic roots containing a semivowel typically display various irregularities. These can mostly be traced back to two shifts taking place in late Pre-Semitic. {w, y}V → Vː / C_ V ₁ {w, y}{u, i} → V ₁ ː If the newly formed long vowels were part of a closed syllable, they got shortened. Let’s see the effects this has on conjugations q-t-l k-w-n davor danach 3ms präfigiert yaqtilu yakwunu yakuunu 3fp präfigiert yaqtilna yakwunna yakunna 3ms suffigiert qatala kawuna kaana 2ms suffigiert qatalta kawunta kanta Man beobachtet, dass eine Abfolge wie ayuu von dieser Lautverschiebung als ayuw betrachtet wird, somit bakayuu → bakaw. We observe that a sequence like ayuu is treated like ayuw according to this shift, thus bakayuu → bakaw. q-t-l b-k-y davor danach 3ms präfigiert yaqtilu yabkiyu yabkii 3mp suffigiert qataluu bakayuu bakaw Nomen wurden ebenfalls zu der Entstehung der defektiven Deklination beeinflusst. Zudem wurden die “fünf Nomen” erschaffen, die eine besondere Konstrukt-Form aufweisen, zum Beispiel “abuu”, was “Vater des/der” bedeutet. Die Mehrzahlendungen hatten auch ursprünglich ein /w/, wie die Tabelle zeigt Noun declension was also affected, creating the defective declension. Additionally, the “five nouns” possessing a special construct state were created, for example “abuu”, meaning “father of”. Plural endings originally had a /w/ as well: Mask Nom Mask Obl Fem Nom davor -wu -wi -watu danach -uu -ii -aatu Muster der gebrochenen Mehrzahlen CaCaa{y,w}iC and CaCaaCiiC wurden von diesen Lautverschiebungen erschaffen, sie waren ursprünglich regelmäßige CaCaaCiC(iC) Formierungen. Spätere Verallgemeinerung breitete sie auf Wörter aus, die ursprünglich keinen Halbvokal hatten. The broken plural patterns of CaCaa{y,w}iC and CaCaaCiiC were created by these sound changes, said patterns originally just had regular CaCaaCiC(iC) forms. Later Analogy spread them to words that did not originally have a semivowel. Sg. pre-shift Sg. post-shift Pl. pre-shift Pl. post-shift CVC{y,w}VC CVCVVC CaCaa{y,w}iC CVCCV{w,y}VC CVCCVVC CaCaaCiyiC CaCaaCiiC *Ich glaube, dass das CaCaaCiC-Muster erweitert werden konnte, um jegliche Nummer an Konsonanten zu beherbergen, indem lediglich mehr /i/-Vokale hinzugefügt wurden. *I believe that the CaCaaCiC pattern could be extended to fit any number of root consonants by just adding more /i/-vowels. 2. Entstehung der Doppelwurzeln / Creation of geminate roots Zwei gleichnamige Konsonanten häufen sich an wenn dies nicht die Silbenstruktur verletzt: C ₁ VC ₁ → VCC / C_V C ₁ VC ₁ → CC / V_V Das Ergebnis sind verschiedene unregelmäßige Muster für Wurzeln, die den gleichen Konsonant an zweiter und dritter Stelle haben. Two identical consonants will cluster up if this does not violate syllable structure constraints: C ₁ VC ₁ → VCC / C_V C ₁ VC ₁ → CC / V_V The result of this is various unusual patterns for roots that have the same phoneme as their 2 nd and 3 rd root consonant: strong geminate Prefix conjugation yaf3ul yafu33 Suffix conjugation fa3al fa33 Paucal noun af3ilat afi33at Außerdem wurden lange Vokale hier auch als Abfolge eines kurzen Vokales und eines Halbvokals behandelt, und deshalb wurden Adjektive wie jayyid von ursprünglichem jayiid geschaffen. Additionally, long vowels were once again treated as a sequence of a short vowel followed by a semi-vowel, thus creating adjectives such as jayyid from original jayiid. 3. The patterns CiCiC and CiCiiC are largely absent in Proto-Semitic. A notable exception is “siniina” meaning “years”. This absence is trivially explained by the following sound shift: i(ː) → a(ː) / _Ci(ː) What is import here is that this does not apply to cases in which the two i-vowels are seperated by a consonant cluster. In line with chapter 1, the plural form “siniina” derives itself from an earlier “sinwina”. As such, the dissimilation was blocked. 4. Der vierte Langvokal / The forth long vowel Der Vokal /əː/ verschob sich zu /aː/ und vorheriges /ə/ niedrigte sich zu /a/. Der Vokal /aː/ erschien ursprünglich unter Anderem in Inneres-a Mehrzahlformierungen. Wir können diesen Vokal lediglich aufgrund seines Einflusses auf vorhergehende Vokale rekonstruieren, wie in Kapitel 5 gezeigt werden wird. The vowel /əː/ merged into /aː/ and a previous /ə/ lowered to /a/. The vowel /aː/ originally appeared among others in internal-a plural formations. We can only reconstruct this vowel based off of the effects it has on preceeding vowels. 5. Vereinfachung der Silbenstruktur / Simplficiation of the Syllable Structure Die Silbenstruktur des Ursemitischens wird üblich dargelegt als: CV{C, ː} Nun werde ich demonstrieren, dass diese Silbenstruktur nicht altertümlich, sondern neu ist. Es gab eine Kette dreier Lautverschiebungen, die die Silbenstruktur vereinfachten. Davor wieß die Sprache eine sehr komplexe Silbenstruktur CCV(ː)CC auf. Proto-Semitic’s syllable structure is widely agreed upon as: CV{C, ː} Now I will demonstrate that this syllable structure is not archaic, but rather innovative. There was a chain of three sound shifts that simplified the syllable structure. Previously, a very complex syllable structure of CCV(ː)CC was found. Eine Lautverschiebung verschöbe dann Doppelkonsonanten zu Einfachen, sofern die Doppelkonsonanten nicht mit der neuen CV{C,ː} war: Cː → C / {Vː, C, #}_, _{C, #} In Semitic languages, the D-stem is marked by doubling of the middle root consonant and typically signifies an intensive or causative meaning of the root. The verb al noun pattern ta12ii3u is a strange exception, being associated with the D-stem, but not having a doubled middle root consonant. Furthermore, imperfectives in the Semitic languages too have a doubled middle root consonant: ya1a22V3. The active imperfective participle 1aa2i3 does not have a doubled root consonant, but its broken plural 1u22aa3 does. In Akkadian, the absolute state is marked by the removal of the case ending. If an illegal geminate is now found at the end of a word, it is reduced: šarrum → šar. I conclude that the original patterns in all of these cases were indeed geminated: ta122ii3u, 1aa 22 i3u, šarr, and thus, a more complex syllable structure was originally possible. A sound change would then reduce double consonants into a single consonant, if the environment was no longer fit with the new CV{C,ː} syllable structure: Cː → C / {Vː, C, #}_, _{C, #} 5.2 Verkürzung der Langvokale / Shortening of Long Vowels Semitische Silbenstruktur erlaubt keine geschlossene Silbe mit langem Vokale. Semitic syllable structure does not permit a closed syllable with a long vowel. In cases where such a syllable type would be expected, the vowel is simply shortened: Upon the feminine plural marker -na being added, the verb yagiibu becomes yagibna. The feminine form of the pattern ta12ii3u is not ta12ii3tu as might be expected, but rather ta12i3tu. This is the same phenomenon. Besides this we find that at the end of words, vowels may often be either long or short: yamaanu – yamanu, 1u22aa3u – 1u22a3u, 1i2aa3 – 1u2a3. This is due to case endings often being optional in earlier Semitic. Ohne Kasus Mit Kasus Vor Verkürzung 1u22aa3 1u22aa3u Nach Verkürzung 1u22a3 1u22aa3u Als die Fallendungen nun anfingen, häufiger zu werden wurde der kasuslose Allomorph dennoch oft beibehalten oder generalisiert. Wir können die Lautverschiebung so formulieren: Vː → V /_C{C,#} /aː/ wird /ə/ wenn gekürzt. when cases became more widespread, the short vowel of the caseless allomorph was often generalized or preserved. We can formulate the sound shift like this: Vː → V /_C{C,#} /aː/ became /ə/ when shortened. 5.3 Echovokaleinfügung / Echo Vowel insertion Um die vielen übrigen unerlaubten Konsonantenhäufungen aufzulösen, wurden Echovokale in sie eingefügt. In order to patch up the many illegal clusters that still remained in the language, echo vowels were inserted into them. 5.3.1 Echovokale an dem Wortende / Final Echo Vowels Wie in Kapitel 5.2 können mehrere Wortformen aufgrund dieser Lautverschiebung auftreten, eine von einer kasuslosen Form und die Andere von einer Form mit Kasusendung. Similarly as in chapter 5.2, multiple word forms can exist due to this sound change, one developing from a caseless form, one from a form with case: kasuslos Mit Kasusendung 1a23 davor 1a23 1a23u danach 1a2a3 1a23u 1i23 davor 1i23 1i23u danach 1i2i3 (→1a2i3) 1i23u 1u23 davor 1u23 1u23u danach 1u2u3 1u23u Diese alternierenden Formen sind für viele Wörter des Ursemitischens rekonstruiert und bleiben in vielen jetzigen semitischen Sprachen. Obwohl Echovokale auch anderswo erscheinen können, können wir schließen, dass an Schlussstelle Konsonantenhäufungen durch diese Verschiebung aufgehoben wurden: Ø → V ₁ / V ₁ C_C# These alternatable forms are reconstructed for many Proto-Semitic words and still persist in contemporary Semitic languages. Allthough echo vowels occur non-finally as well, we can conclude that final clusters were resolved by this sound change: Ø → V ₁ / V ₁ C_C# 5.3.2 Echovokale an dem Wortanfang / Initial Echo Vowels In der perfektiven Beugung der Verben finden wir zwei verschiedene Arten Vorsilben: ʔa-, ta-, ya- and na- as well as ʔu-, tu-, yu- and nu-. Die letzteren erscheinen als Vorsilbe mancher abgeleiteter Stämme. Within the perfective inflection of verbs, we find two different types of prefixes in Semitic languages: ʔa-, ta-, ya- and na- as well as ʔu-, tu-, yu- and nu-. The later occurs in the prefixes of some derived stems. G-Stamm ya 12 i 3 D-Stamm yu 1 a 22 i 3 Š-Stamm yuša 12 i 3 Gt-Stamm ya 1 ta 2 i 3 Wir erkennen hier, dass die u-Vorsilben in offenen Silben auftreten, während die a-Vorsilben in geschlossenen Silben auftreten. Die Erklärung dessen ist, das die u-Vorsilben ursprünglich gar kein Vokal hatten, was von der Silbenstruktur her erlaubt gewesen wäre. Später wurde der u-Vokal eingefügt, um die Konsonantenhäufung zu vermeiden. What we notice here is that the u-prefixes occur in open syllables, while the a-prefixes occur in closed syllables. The explanation here is that the u-prefixes did not originally have a vowel at all, which was permitted by the syllable structure. Later, the u-vowel was inserted to prevent an initial cluster. In initial syllables, the quality of this vowel was never allowed to be /a/, in environments with neighbouring /a/, /u/ was used instead. However, /i/ was used in the case of neighbouring /i/-vowels, and thus no such pattern as CuCiiC is found in Proto-Semitic. The /i/- vowel was also used for a neighbouring /aː/-vowel, though not for /ə(ː)/. This explains why the short-vowel form of the plural pattern CiCaaC is CuCaC instead of CiCaC 5.3.3 Mittige Echovokale / Medial Echo Vowels Mittige Echovokale traten auch auf, und sie unterlagen komplizierten Regeln. Ich werde sie wannanders in Betracht ziehen. Medial echo vowels also existed and followed complex rules. I’ll discuss them another time.
