Vinz, a Jew, Saïd, an Arab, and Hubert, a black boxer, have grown up here where high levels of diversity coupled with the racist and oppressive police force have raised tensions to a critical breaking point. They wander aimlessly about their home turf in the aftermath of the violence as they try to come to grips with their outrage over the brutal incident. After one of them finds a police officer’s discarded weapon, their night seems poised to take a bleak turn. La Haine (Hatred) was nominated for the Palm D’Or at Cannes, and its director Mathieu Kassovitz won the Best Director award there. Kassovitz’s triumph is in finding humanity in every single one of his characters. Hard - hitting and breathtakingly effective, La Haine takes an uncompromising look at long - festering social and economic divisions affecting 1990s Paris. Tickets can be purchased in the Galleria before the show $5 Ticket plus a $5 annual membership fee CASH ONLY Home - Port Moody Film Society Drama Runtime 1 hour 38 min, France, 1995, 14A Trailer for La Haine The Band ’ s Visit - Friday June 12 th, 7:30 PM FREE Film following our famously brief AGM A band comprised of members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. With no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at, the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina who offers them lodging. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band makes its own impact on the town and the town on them. Something marvelous happens as the filmmaker, in his first feature, expertly metes out small scenes of communication between people taught, for generations, to be wary of one another. This Band swings with visual wit, verbal charm and a completely droll sense of humor. One can only hope that this film shows the potential for what the future can hold.
