Minnesota is one of only seven states that allows the open carry of firearms in their most essential government buildings. Both red and blue states have seen the need to follow this common - sense policy — so should Minnesota. After what House members have been through as a whole: the assassination of Speaker Emerita Hortman, increased threats of political violence, as well as concern about inebriated individuals carrying within the Capitol, this is the least we can do to keep our members safe. We ask that you consider policies to ensure that we keep a safe and effective workplace. The work we do here is too important to be jeopardized by threats, fear, and harm. It ’ s also not just about us, it ’ s abo ut the tens of thousands of Minnesotans who come through the Capitol each year. There are students on field trips, constituents visiting from across the state, hundreds of staff that keep the Capitol working, and more. We have an obligation to keep the Cap itol safe for all those who participate in our democracy.
