Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist (c) Resume Writers Australia 2020 RESUME WRITERS AUSTRALIA Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist 1. Choose your Business structure. I started up as a "Sole Trader", and this tends to suit most of us at this stage of the journey. https://www.ato.gov.au/business/starting-your-own-business/before-you-get- started/choosing-your-business-structure/ USE THIS SPACE TO BRAINSTORM YOUR BUSINESS VISION. What does your brand look like? What do you represent/stand for? What is your mission? Who do you want to serve? How much money do you want to make per week/month/year? You may not want to have one to start with, but it will eventually come through in your work. IE Resume Writer specialising in Student Resumes, Graduates, Administration Professionals, Customer Service/Retail, Career Changers, etc. Think about your life and work experience so far and adapt it to your strengths. Identify costs you may have to start up. Resume Writing is generally very low start up - this course is likely to be the biggest investment you'll make to begin with. However, consider technology (laptop, phone, internet), website and domain purchase, any ongoing memberships you may wish to invest in, etc. This list will change as your business evolves but to start with you can keep costs very low. Also, consider investing/signing up for Dropbox to keep all your files - it's approx $90 per year but mine is tax deductible so I'm sure yours would be too. Decide on business name (if applicable - you may wish to operate under your legal name), website name/domain (if you wish to have a website) and check availability on ASIC - https://asic.gov.au Create Business Plan if you wish. Here is a great guide: - https://www.business.gov.au/planning/templates-and-tools/business- plan-template-and-guide Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist 3. Registrations: Register for an ABN (Australian Business Number) – this is free and legally required to start your business Register Business Name with ASIC (if you are not operating under your legal name) Consider your tax registration if you require (probably not needed at this point but will be good to become familiar with it) - https://www.business.gov.au/registrations/register-for-taxes Purchase Domain Name - I recommend or if you are creating your website using Wordpress then I recommend purchasing your domain through them as well (it will cost a little bit more but the ease of it being in one place can prevent some headaches in the set up process) GoDaddy.com Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist Resume Writer - Business Start Up Checklist 4. Finances/Insurances: Speak to your accountant about any financial implications Open Business Bank Account - you can check out what your banking institution has - I use CBA and Westpac, but have heard that Bankwest and NAB have low fee options Look into Accounting Systems - XERO is what I use, but until about 12 months ago I was just using PayPal for all incoming payments and invoicing, and then extracting it into an excel spreadsheet for tax time. Keep it simple! It doesn't have to be complicated. MYOB Essentials is about $30 a month and is really simple to use! Keep a tax record of your purchases for your business and hand them over to your accountant come tax time. I can't 100% guarantee what is or isn't tax deductible (I can tell you what I have claimed but to be safe I must advise that all of our circumstances may be different). I have claimed courses like this one for my business for tax purposes, as it is classed as Professional Development. Check with your accountant! Talk to an insurance broker about what insurances you may need for your business. It is important to ensure you are adequately covered - and if you don't want insurance, you should educate yourself on the risks.
