A colon introduces something important that follows. There are three main uses. 1. To introduce a list A colon tells the reader that examples or items are coming. Examples: We need three ingredients: flour, eggs and milk. My favourite sports are: football, badminton and swimming. T he words before the colon should form a complete sentence. 2. To introduce an explanation The second part explains the first. Examples: Sam looked worried: he had forgotten his homework. I stayed indoors: the weather was terrible. Ask: "What does the second clause explain?" 3. To create emphasis A colon can build suspense before an important word or phrase. Examples: There was only one choice: apologise. She had one dream: success. T he colon makes the final word more dramatic.
