The Berserkers The beasts from Norse history and stories often thought as a shamanic cult and an uncontrollable force. These men were believed to be shapeshifters as on battle they would fight like bears, wolves, and other wild animals. Feared among foe and friend, the berserker only had one emotion when they entered their frenzied state, rage. Anything in their way would be killed, known for only using their hands and teeth to fight. The berserkers are said to have been unkillable, steel and fire had no effects on them. The Berserkers would be seen in front of Viking and Norse forces, wearing animal pelts, no armor, and sometimes covered in blue paint or blood. The Berserkers were so eager for battle they would bite their shields and swords and sometimes kill each other before the battle began. When the battle would start they would throw down their weapons and go into a frenzied state known as berserkergang or going berserk. They would howl like animals and foam at the mouth, killing everything in their path, friends and foes alike. They wouldn’t react to any pain, including cutting off an arm, after the battle they would be frail and unable to fight for several days. The Berserkers were some of the most resilient warriors of their time.
