Handwriting is a motor skill that needs to be developed correctly before letter formation is even introduced. Whole-arm movement is the preferred method of penmanship, as writers find they are able to write for longer periods with significantly less fatigue. These movement shapes originate from the Spencerian System of Penmanship developed by Platt Spencer. These drills form the foundation of beautiful, fluid penmanship. It is advisable to take just as much care in learning and prioritising these exercises as you would the actual letterforms themselves. Before each writing session, select a few of these drills and practise them for several minutes. Over time, your handwriting will improve noticeably. To use these sheets, trace each drill, beginning at the indicated arrow. Plain sheets are included at the end for independent practice. Happy writing! Introduction © Cursive Script 2026.
