ĠENN (pronounced Jenn) is a musical riot, ready to rock your ears and mess with your brain. They’re serving alternative post-punk madness with a fun twist, fresh out of their DIY framework. Based in Brighton, the band is a result of a trans-national pairing which came about through the internet. Leona Farrugia (vocals), Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums). ĠENN means craziness in the Maltese language. Expanding on this the band commented, “We thought it would be a good idea to choose something short, kinda unique but still easy to pronounce. It signifies our crazy life, ideas and dreams.” Debut EP -‘Liminal’ shows a plethora of contemporary and classic alternative influences taking in nods towards The Slits, Jefferson Airplane, Warpaint, The Doors & Goat Girl. Speaking of the composition of the most recent single, ‘Mackerel’s Funky Mission’ singer, Leona commented, "I think Mackerel's Funky Mission is an escapism mechanism, you sort of pretend to be someone else, in this case, a fish, to escape from a current situation. It's fun to pretend you're something else and write from that perspective. It was also inspired by the lockdown as I wanted to be a fish just to be able to travel, and also by my love for the sea. I tried to be as visual as possible with the lyrics and the story." ĠENN were chosen as one of 30 European bands to represent Malta and the UK at the Music Europe Day 2020 online festival organised by the European Union and the publication Europavox, as well as one of the semi-finalists for the GRAMMY -endorsed, NYC-based e-festival Listen to Womxn. The band were also championed by Glastonbury Festivals Emerging Talent competition. After releasing their debut album ‘Titty Monster’ , the band performed across Europe and the UK; they have had the pleasure of supporting the likes of Hands Off Gretel, PINS, Acid Mothers Temple, The Orielles and Honeyblood. I didn’t wanna go on my own. I dreamt of the magic island: M.A.L.T.A. I figured that I could swim there! I would need to make a quick stop in Spain. I’ve always liked them Spanish ladies; I was told they are into Mackerel. Take me to my destination, you know where I wanna go! (M.A.L.T.A) Take me to my destination, you know where I wanna go! (M.A.L.T.A) See, anyone can do it; you just have to do it! Just imagine that fresh water, the salty water... When I told my friends about it, they just laughed at me, man! But I’m gonna do it either way. I’m feeling it, man! So I gathered a group of fish and we floated with the stream. Oh man, the moon was lit! The grass was wild! Take me to my destination, you know where I wanna go! (M.A.L.T.A) Take me to my destination, you know where I wanna go! (M.A.L.T.A) Instrumental Break Oh! Oh yeah! You know I wanna go baby, so just take me. Oh! We’re gonna go, or what? You know where! M.A.L.T.A!
