They emigrated from France, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to colonial Virginia, at a time when all early colonies were called Virginia. They traveled en mass to Texas, in two or three generations at a time. The Riders and the Matthews on the maternal side came to Texas in 1837 before it was a Republic. These pioneers fought and had their horses stolen by Southern Comanches. These two great pio - neer ranching families came together through the belief that enough land to support a great num - ber of cattle is wealth. The McAshans on the paternal arrived in La Grange, Texas no later than 1845. They are to be honored for their achievements in building our American nation, the Republic of Texas before state - hood, and the city of Houston. As a 7th generation Houstonian and from an even longer line of ranchers, I have been thinking about my experience as such for years. Our older sister, Ann McAshan Baker, told us many family stories. My inspiration in writing this book is to preserve this heritage before it becomes too scat - tered for you, my family, and our descendants to enjoy. ! page 3 Introduction ur earliest ancestors were the Taylors from our maternal side. The History of the Taylors say that the most ancient name of TAYLOR was “Taliaferro” who was with Caesar in his cam - paign in Gaul in 58 B.C. The name appeared again in Normandy, as Baron Taillefer, who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066, leading the Battle of Hastings. James Tay - lor “The Immigrant” was born in 1615 in Carlisle, Cumbria, United Kingdom and settled in America. Carlisle, from whence James came, is 20 miles from Pennington Castle, the old ancestral home, and where his forefathers were buried. According to Hardy’s Colonial Families of the U. S., the Crest of the Taylors of Pennington (Armstrong, p. 163) is a naked arm couped at the shoulder, embowed, holding an arrow. The motto is “Consequitur quod cumque petit” (He obtains whatever he seeks). Zachary Taylor II (1707-1768) was the son of James Taylor II, of Virginia. He married Elizabeth Lee, (1709-1753). She was the daughter of Hancock Lee of Bloomsbury, Knight of Ditchley and Grand of the Golden Horseshoe. They were the grandparents of President Zachary Taylor, the great aunt and uncle of President James Madison, and the great-grandparents of Sara Knox Taylor, wife of Presi - dent Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy. Paternal Side Our earliest paternal ancestors were the Agees. Mathieu Agee was born in Nantes, France in 1670. The family was of noble birth, but because of its espousal of the French Protestant Huguenot faith and subsequent persecution, gave up its claim to nobility. Their lands were con fi scated by the revo - cation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV. Accordingly, Mathieu left France in 1688 for Holland and joined the ranks of William of Orange’s troops to fi ght in the Battle of the Boyne to dethrone the then Catholic King James of England. William assumed the Crown. In recognition of the aid ren - dered, William hired 5 ships and offered free passage to the New World with free land grants. Mathieu arrived in Virginia in 1690. Mathieu’s son James Agee (1725-1821) of Virginia was married to Mary Elizabeth Ford Agee (1729-1821). They were together for 75 years, making them the longest married of our ancestors. Nehemiah McAshan/McShane/McShan II (1784-1846), of Virginia, was the son of Nehemiah Mack - Shan I born in 1752. He accrued 3,702 acres of land for farming and manufacturing. He was a slave owner, as were most of our ancestors. He left Virginia for Texas in early 1845 for a better life for his numerous children and was naturalized as a citizen of the Republic on October 6, 1845. Cause of Death: Killed by Southern Comanche Indians in Quanah Parker Territory, Texas. For the last 2 years of his life, he was a pioneer and an Indian fi ghter. Either before or after the news that he had died, his wife left Virginia with their children and slaves by herself and moved to La Grange, Texas. The McAshans of Houston, were people who had a belief that public service leaves a strong legacy. They helped grow Houston into one of the great metropolitan cities it is today. They also left wealth through land, cotton, banking, oil and gas. This book is dedicated with much love to Martha McAshan Guerin, who looked after our oil and gas legacy when no one else was around to do so. ! O page 4 Chapter 1 !
