Borderlands Creative People & Places Artist Brief: Project Title: Grangetown Community Shed Specification : Borderlands wish to commission a C reative based in Tees Valley to co - produce and co - create work with members of the community of Grangetown and support them to develop artistic designs that will transform the outside of a community shed ( shipping container) at Future Regeneration of Grangetown (FROG) Community Centre. This will include the facilitation of community consultation to identify ideas and design the artwork O n c ompletion of the artwork there will be an unveiling event end of March 2023. The deadline for this application is Tuesday 21 st February, at midnight. Overview of the Project: In June 2022 , FROG w as successful in securing capital funding from Sirius, to develop an exciting new project through the purchase of a container, materials , and tools. Further funding was secured via capita funding from R edcar Council’s Public Health, Beyond housing and You Got T his ( Sports England ) to include windows, door , and shutters. The container will support adults of all ages and abilities to design and develop a community space with separate workstations that they can then learn to safely use tools, restore old furniture, repair items, make benches, planters and much more. SUEZ have provided staff skills to help with the inside improvements including from joiners, electricians, painters and welders to ensure the container is fit for purpose. How the project will address Borderlands ’ key themes : The project will improve the environment by reducing the impact of landfill through recycling and upcycling old furniture. It will create planters, benches and other outdoor furniture to improve the quality of place and sense of pride in their community. Early discussions about the design of the outside of the container has brought up several ideas around the heritage of our community. Project Reach : There will be a consultation meeting with residents of Grangetown to gather their ideas and w ishes for the artwork on the container, on the 8 th March at Grangetown United Community Hub. Create legacy : The artist will work with the participants to capture/gather ideas that will help to celebrate and showcase the history and heritage of the place. The project will hopefully en able participants to feel a sense of pride and belonging , to see their ideas bro ught to life on a shared community asset Th e community shed will be utilised by members of the community from all demographics and will be used for various activities which will be of benefit to so many people for generations to come. Monitoring & Evaluation : It is crucial for Borderlands to assess impact and be responsive to identified needs in future project planning. Borderlands will provide monitoring and evaluation forms to be completed by all participants of the project. The artist must ensure that these forms are completed and returned to the Borderlands team on completion of the project. Groups/participants may want to continue/develop the activity which may include applying for their own funding or becom ing a new independent/constituted group. Border lands can offer support which may include the following potent i al approaches: • Becoming a volunteer for Borderlands as a Cultural Collaborator • Signpost ing to Middlesbrough Voluntary Development Agency/Redcar Voluntary Development Agency. • Commissioning opportunities, with open call outs for artistic proposals, detailing the budget available; • Organising c ommunity decision panels, who decide which artistic projects and activities are undertaken Communication & Branding : Borderlands have the right without reservation or additional charge to utilise photographs and films created in relation to these workshops for non - commercial purposes including promotion, publicity , or reporting. Borderlands and CPP/ACE must be referenced on any publicity, reproduction or publishing of all or part of the materials. We also ask that you p rovid e us with copy for social media , this includes quotes, photo graphs , and feedback. Members of Borderlands will also attend the consultation session in person to do this as well. Requirements : • Please ensur e any access requirements are met. • Any images used should , where possible , have a visual description transcription to aid visually impaired people. • The typeset designed should consider choices that would be beneficial to both neurodivergent and sight impaired audiences. • Permissions must be sought for any copyrighted content. P ost Event : All related monitoring and evaluation information (we will share the related forms) will need to be collected and returned to Borderlands. These must adhere to the relevant Data Protection requirements. Infrastructure : After gathering the ideas and wishes from the community residents of Grangetown and agreeing on what is to be included in the artwork , they have asked that you complete the artwork yourself. You will have three weeks to do this, with completion being 29 th March Ready for the Community Unveiling on 31 st March. Further details of the composition of the shipping container and its measurements will be given in due course. Additionall y , recommendations of w hat paint to use can be advised as well. Eligibility : Applicants must • B e based, from, trained or living in the Tees Valley • Have e vidence of the ability to produce high quality works of art • Have experience of working with and creating works alongside community p articipants Timeline : Stage One – Submission of Commission Proposal Closing date for applications: 2 1st February , at midnight. Stage Two – Discussions If your Stage One application is successful, we will invite you to a Teams meeting with Emily and Shahda to discuss your application. These meetings will take place on either 1st or 2 nd March.
