From the point of view of pharmacology, data are reported regarding the effect of echinochrome A and related metabolites from sea urchins on the survival and functional properties of stem cells, which can facilitate ex vivo application of this compound in medicine. For scientists who isolate and establish structures of marine natural compounds, an article devoted to the proof of the microbial origin of a typical metabolite earlier found exclusively from marine invertebrates, 6-epi-monanchorin, may also be of interest. A range of new marine metabolites was discovered from the both marine invertebrates and marine microorganisms, particularly in marine isolates of fungi. Some marine natural products could be applied to treat such diseases as Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke, viral infections, and so on. Magnificamide, a new peptide from sea anemones, inhibits porcine and human saliva amylases, showing its probable antidiabetic properties. Application of the genomic approach was discussed in studies on various marine bacteria, producing marine enzymes with unusual specificity. The lectins capable of recognizing glycoforms of different substrates demonstrate the possibility to be used to elaborate new medical diagnostics.

Current understandings of ageing and diversity are impoverished in three main ways. Firstly, with regards to thinking about what inequalities operate in later life there has been an excessive preoccupation with economic resources. On the other hand, less attention has been paid to cultural norms and values, other resources, wider social processes, political participation and community engagement. Secondly, in terms of thinking about the ‘who’ of inequality, this has so far been limited to a very narrow range of minority populations. Finally, when considering the ‘how’ of inequality, social gerontology’s theoretical analyses remain under-developed. The overall effect of these issues is that social gerontology remains deeply embedded in normative assumptions which serve to exclude a wide range of older people. This book aims to challenge and provoke the above described normativity and offer an alternative approach which highlights the heterogeneity and diversity of ageing.This book is made open access as part of the Knowledge Unlatched KU Select 2016 Front List Collection

This open access book discusses socio-environmental interactions in the middle to late Holocene, covering specific areas along the ancient Silk Road regions. Over twenty chapters provide insight into this topic from various disciplinary angles and perspectives, ranging from archaeology, paleoclimatology, antiquity, historical geography, agriculture, carving art and literacy. The Silk Road is a modern concept for an ancient network of trade routes that for centuries facilitated and intensified processes of cultural interaction and goods exchange between West China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Coherent patterns and synchronous events in history suggest possible links between social upheaval, resource utilization and climate or environment forces along the Silk Road and in a broader area. Post-graduates in studying will benefit from this work, as well as it will stimulate young researchers to further explore the role played by the environment in long-term socio-cultural changes.
